3 Tips for Safer IFR flying

I want to thank everybody who came out at Oshkosh. We are actually traveling back from Oshkosh. Last week is our first show officially back. Guys we had so much fun. From those who came by the booth. To the seminars, to the good pilot gathering on saturday night. We couldn’t ask for better turnouts in any case. We had so much fun. If you came by the booth we got a picture together. We did the last radio show broadcast from the actual booth. And that was fun. I have some people coming by and everything else but still had really really good time. So thanks for those who came by. And also thank you to everybody who participated in our FAA Written Test Prep Boot Camp. We did the Private Pilot Boot Camp. Actually, from the house we rented. In the evenings after Oshkosh which at the times seems like a great idea. I realized what a crazy idea it was. You know? Up in 5 am, working on the booth, and it wasn’t easy work. Be on Oshkosh then go gathering some evenings and by the way we have a webinars too. It was very long day but just now I realized how rewarding it really is. As of right now 7 Private Pilots go out and passed the written test. The lowest score they have gotten so far is a 95. A ton of 97s. A few of 95s. Really great stuff. I just spoke with a few people who’d taking instruments here. Soon to be instrument pilots. A little bit after work. So all this stuff is up now guys to it. If you are saying you miss the live stuff? All the recordings are up. Everything is there. All the quizzes, all the slides, and all is there for you to digest that’s something you are interested in. You need to get off that monkey off your back and really commit and kick butt through your written test. It is a great proven way to do that. I just want to share , David, one of those recent success stories. I just wan to share this quick little clip. I’ve never been in the pilot’s seat. It’s not like all my friends fly. I’ve just recently meet a few people that fly. So I mean other than commercially I’ve never flown. So I though it’s very cool clip and very nice for David to send that over and just super happy for him. And again I wish of you that kind of a dream way. I wish student to go about it. Knock out the groundwork. Knock out the written test before you even set foot on an airplane. I mean at least go out to the airport. Make sure you like flying. Make sure you got stomach for flying certainly. But before you get serious in your lessons. I’ve made that terrible mistake. I went out and I had all my requirements done. Right everything’s set. All I needed to do was passed my written test. My instructor was telling me. “Jason, I could sign you up in your checkride tomorrow. You could pass your checkride tomorrow.” But you don’t have your written test done. You got to get that monkey off your back sometime and get that written test done. Get it done early. I want to chat some IFR flying with you guys. Private pilot guys, no big deal. You may said this “Oh, an IFR Flying topic it doesn’t apply to me.” You’d be surprised on how much this going to apply to you, my private pilot guys as well. Who just want to become a private pilot. Who doesn’t lease wanna have some instrument knowledge in their back pocket. You may not get your IFR ready. But you know what? I always tell people “ At least go to the ground school. At least get the fundamentals that if you ever got in a jam. You have half an idea of what’s going on up there. It’s gonna help you the instrument scans to make you safer pilots. So I want to share with you guys 3 tips for safer IFR Flying; for better IFR Flying.

1. You shouldn’t get your IFR Certificate to go out and shoot approaches to zero minimum. Take off with 0,0 and landing down to minimums. You may say “Jason, that’s not what IFR is for?.” Well yeah you could use it for that. I could also go out and flying classical on airspace and one mile clear clouds with my private pilot certificate but must done that. You know? I hope not. I would look forward to doing. This isn’t flying to Alaska sort of stuff. Which is a good show by the way. When they do some crazy flying there. Not promoting or condoning by the way. But my point is this. When I tell people you can use it for this. Did you ever woken up in the morning and it’s just you got that morning fog hanging out you know by 9 to 10 o’clock gets up nice and high. That fog just gonna bake right away. That sun will just warm it all up and bake it all away. Absolutely, but you are the one who flying 8 o clock. If you have somewhere to be at 8 o’clock or you know that if you take off at 8 o’clock. You are gonna land by 11 or by then the fog will burn up and you can’t go anywhere because the airports effectively fog in. That’s it where instruments are handy or you could take off get the bug that fog where it’s nice and stable beautiful air. Fly away you are going to and by then the fog is actually burned off or use your instrument Certificate for getting above the clouds. Where’s nice and that smooth. Stay right above those clouds. And said if we were used to in our private pilot license. You know? Get in bump around underneath of them. An IFR rating, In my book, isn’t for going out. Blazing through thunderstorm. Shooting approaches down to precision approaches down to the 200 feet AG minimums. Already had sort of stuff. You know I fly Cessna 150. A hard IFR and a Cessna 150 for me is breaking out like 800 feet. That just about as hard as IFR as I want to get my Cessna 150. Just because it’s not capable. I don’t have an autopilot to help me. I don’t have a Garmen 430. You know watching my every step. You know as I come down. I don’t have that kind of technology. So of course the approaches it’s gonna vary of what kind of aircraft you have. And I certainly believe that you should go up with the flight instructor to shoot a real approach and have minimums one day and really see what it’s like. But you are gonna realize that IFR reading is most importantly to make you safer pilot but help you where you want to go when the conditions just okay. An IFR reading as our good friend. Larry Diamond, CFII extra ordinare, who hopes all the things of MzeroA.com would say. On IFR reading, it’s just a reading to fly the original VFR. I think that’s a very smart way to put it. Because there’s no reason to go blazing through any sort of crazy stuff. That’s what you are running into embed thunderstorm and sharing winds and all sort of stuff. Certainly nothing that I want to surround in that case. So the first tip I want to share with you guys is IFR is not to go shooting and blazing approaches down the minimums. And this of course comes from General Aviation Prospective. I totally understand as a for hire pilot as a commercial pilot. The things change and I’ve been there, done that, totally understand that. But the audience I am speaking to right now is Low to Mid Time. Private and Instrument Pilots is where I speaking to hobbyist recreational pilots. Not somebody who’s looking a Career out of this things. Somebody who is looking for fun way and take the family on a nice vacation. That’s why I’m talking to right now. Right?

2. Breif every approach and I want you to have a system down path. This is what I mean my ground school members will be nothing new to you guys but what I mean is breath everything from the name and the type of that approach. I say this because at the Airport where I’m based at. We had a runway 23. There’s also another airport called Williston airport. Just north. It also has runway 23. It also happens to be the same C Tap frequency. There’s a lot of simulators. I can’t tell you how many times students coming in thinking they are shooting the GPS 23 into Dunellon Airport. And it really had it played out for the GPS 23 in Wilson Airport. Very easy and common mistake to me. Breif out approach plate. Not just your frequencies but breath it. Yes! This is the Ios 36 Approach at Ocala. And I got, if I’ve tune, if I’m identified those proper frequencies. Right? So make sure you have that sort of stuff out path. Sounds easy . Sounds simple, but you should be amaze how many students improperly brief these approaches. I want you to find a system that works for you. I’ve got some great videos and stuff inside the online ground school. I think I might have a free video on Youtube on how to breath on approach plates. By doing it my old video. I might consider update that one in the near future but find a system that works for you. The important thing is that to do the same thing every time. When you got that system down path. You are not gonna skip something. You got it down. So you are gonna breath that approach the same way each and everytime. Fill your mind with the same information. The same part of information that you need at walking in through each and every flight.

3. Never Stop Learning. When it comes to IFR flying. Of course we have the motto “That a Good Pilot is always Learning.” But IFR skills, I find are the quickest to erode. You know, I’ve dealt with a lot of Private Pilots who laid off flying for 2,3,4 or 5 years. They hop back in the cockpit and making fly the airplane great but what’s missing is that ground knowledge. The skill of flying the airplane will always stay with you. I mean the skills really a little bit rusty but what’s going to erode the most is your knowledge. And this goes to Private Pilots too. I mean, you may heck out flying an airplane but Do you remember how to operate this type of airspace been so long. IFR flying is a top skilled to master. And it’s an even easier skill to end up losing and this is the situation. Yes, we have our six approaches in 6 months. But guys if you are pushing 4 to 5 months and you know you are the end of your currency. This is a great time to up your personal minimums. It’s because you don’t fly in 4 or 5 months. Are you still current? Well, technically yes. But honestly, just as a private pilot. Imagine not flying 3 or 4 months and jump in the cockpit. When you find you are little behind in the airplane. Maybe you’re a little bit cautious. A little bit more anxious. You know trying to get back some skill here. That’s a perfect situation to raise your personal minimums. Maybe you seem to go IFR flying in a beautiful clear tan kind of day. Just make it yourself used to being back in that system. We are working through all that. So don’t stop learning or flying for say. Well IFR skill erode so quickly and listen this is something you could do in a lot of ground school members should do this. Just keep themselves up on the ground knowledge. You guys you are doing it right now by listening to this radio show. My Pilots Inner Circle Members are great examples of this. They are the ones who participate in the webinars I do for my members every monday evening. They are the one who are listening the radio show. They fully understand that a good pilot is always learning mantra. And they fully understand that you could use their knowledge when it comes to your skills. Again it’s gonna take you a lot longer to gain those skills than is actually lose those skills.

Just a recap guys. IFR is not for shooting approaches down the minimums like a wild man. You know flying around or taking off 0,0 crazy conditions. IFR flying are for those foggy days where you know the fogs gonna burned up. You get up in the early morning. To get up in above the clouds sometimes with those chemulus clouds bouncing around where you just want to go above that layer. Smooth cool air. Brief every approach plate. I do care if you get all the important information, the frequencies, the right approach etc. Altitude and that sort of stuff. But what I want you to do is to make sure you brief the approach the same way each and every time. Lastly it’s never stop learning. Skill will erode so quickly.

Great comment from Larry Coming in. Larry just shared from IFR flying. He used the acronym. And this is new to me. Larry I know why I haven’t shared something you are holding out to me, man. The acronym is R-MARTHA.

R for Right Approach “Do I have the right approach brief?” Exactly what we talked about.
M & A is for the Mis Approach, my mis approach procedure. I want to brief that and make sure I have down. Not only brief it for only publish mis approach but IFR pilots will understand that. Listen you don’t always fly to mis approach. Typically they are going to give you a different sort of mis approach so make sure that you’d brief that different mis approach.

R is for Radios. All my radios tune up do you have the right frequencies. Have I tune and identified my ILS or my VOR.

T is for time. If I were to lose this. You know it sometimes seems become localized our only approach and you don’t have time. Just in case it’s VOR approach. I have to add my time down there.

H is for heading our course.

A is for Altitude. This the position higher from the H where MDA than sent out to. Depends unto where the precision and down precision approach.

The Acronym is R-MARTHA.
